'I wanted to capture that lust through the lens.'
There has always been a connection between sex and sports, erotism and exercise and of course, lust and locker rooms. It's not as simple as all those hot athletes lifting, bending, lunging and sweating. Sure, that stimulating on it's own, but it's a little more adolescently rooted. For many of us growing up, the first visual signs of sexuality when we were sports related.
It was often athletes we saw shirtless, in spandex and in underwear ads. Physically fit and athletically skilled men were often the symbols of masculinity and virility. There was also the locker room, a place where so many of us experienced being sexually stimulated, while having to suppress our natural urges at the same time. There was nothing more exciting, and nothing more terrifying, than a locker room full of naked men showering, guys an jockstraps and undies as they changed.

I remember being a kid, and for the first time, seeing a guy close to my own age with pubic hair in the locker room. It was also while playing hockey, I also saw the straight friend I was crushing over completely naked in the locker room. I was so sure that I was blushing, and that he knew exactly what I was thinking. I quickly fled, running into a bathroom stall. I don't think he noticed, at least he didn't let on that he did, but those early locker room memories were memorable milestones in my sexual awakening.
It was that retro feel of excitement, that sexually nostalgic time that came to mind when I first saw this series of images from Charlotte NC based photographer
Matthew Dentremont. I'd been following Matthew's (
matthewtakespictures) work on Instagram for awhile now, and was excited when he sent on images from this shoot.
There was so much about the visuals, from the paneled walls in the second part of the shoot, to models Tyler and Tariq in their striped tube socks and jock straps, that immediately evoked those lustful days in the rink, the gym, and especially the locker room. Since this is the first time I've featured Matthew's work on the site, I of course had to throw some questions his way about his work, and the inspiration for this theme and series of times.

What visuals inspired you as a kid? Visuals that inspired me as a kid was anything shiny, sparkly, soft, or pretty. I have always had an eye for beauty in all different ways, shapes, elements, textures etc
What were your first subjects to shoot, models, or did you begin with something else?
I “picked up” photography back in high school over 15 years ago with my best friend Sarah. We would get inspired by LADY GAGA, and on weekends run to Michaels, pick up a whole bunch of random crafts, do each others hair and makeup, then photograph each other in various locations.
What led you to focus on the male form?
I don’t photograph the “male form” as often as I’d like and its something I want to continue to do more and more, because I think men are the most beautiful creatures… every inch of them… No offense ladies..
Do you have a favorite moment that stand out from your work?
A favorite moment for me in my photography journey would be connecting with other creatives and collaborating on epic photoshoots together. I love when I can vibe with the person I am photographing and just have a good relaxed time with it. Photography isn’t supposed to be stiff, or too serious.. It’s meant to be fun and freeing.
Do you remember the first time you shot a nude male model?
The first time I photographed a male in the nude was a few years ago. He wanted photos for his boyfriend at the time to turn him on for a birthday present. I was surprisingly not nervous at all, and wanted to make sure the model felt the same… So I think my energy made him feel better and more relaxed. I will say however, I couldn’t help but getting a little turned on during the shoot looking ay my beautifully sculpted subject. We kept it professional of course.
What inspired this shoot?
For this particular shoot I chose the models, they both live in the same city as me, and I have known OF the through the gay community here in Charlotte, NC. I know for this shoot I wanted two men who were both physically fit but also physically different in order to show contrast, yet unity at the same time!
What was the goal/theme you were going for?
My vision for the shoot was two college jocks who are just starting to experiment with their sexuality in college and are very interested in each other and I wanted to capture that lust through the lens. I think they rocked it.
What is your favorite part about this shoot?
Favorite part of the shoot was seeing the two guys have fun with each other, and watching their natural chemistry on set was magic!
Any dream themes you're hoping to shoot in the future?
Future “dream themes" for future male shoots would be… I have a vision of naked men in a large colorful field of flowers. I also want to do a beach photoshoot this summer with multiple men of all ethnicities
